Windows File Loss After Using Dfsrmig.exe Tool To Migrate SYSVOL Share
In some situations, when you use DFS (Distributed File System) Replication service, you might encounter file loss problems in Windows 2003 server. In such cases, all of your significant data becomes inaccessible and you have to go for File Recovery solutions to resolve this behavior.
Consider the below given scenarios:
You use Dfsrmig.exe (DFS Replication service migration tool) to migrate SYSVOL share from the FRS (File Replication Service) to DFSR (Distributed File System Replication) service in Windows 2003 Server based computer.
Some RODCs (Read-Only Domain Controllers) exist in the domain.
In these cases, the Windows NTFRS (NT File Replication Service) subscriptions containers aren’t removed on the domain controllers in this domain after migration process completes. This issue might results into serious file loss if the underwritten conditions are true:
Active Directory is deleted from any of the domain controllers of this domain.
Active Directory is instaled on the same domain controller in other domain.
n new domain, you use Dfsrmig.exe utility for migrating SYSVOL share from FRS to DFSR replication service. Here two junctions are pointing to same target-%SYSTEMROOT%Sysvol_dfsrdomain after migration.
If the administrator finds redundancy which is triggered by the above scenario and removes additional junction, all of the Group Policy scripts and objects in new domain are removed on all the domain controllers after Active Directory service replication.
When this problem occurs with your Windows 2003 Server computer, you face disastrous file loss situations and you need to find out the cause of the problem and carry out file recovery to fix it.
Root of the issue
This behavior of Windows 2003 Server generally takes place because DFS Replication service migration tool or Dfsrmig.exe doesn’t remove invalid junction which points to %SYSTEMROOT%Sysvol_dfsrdoman folder during migration process.
Resolution
To prevent this problem from being occurred in future, Microsoft has provided a hotfix. To resolve the current problem of data loss, you are recommended to use File Recovery Software to scan affected Windows hard drive and retrieve data from it.
The File Recovery Software use efficient scanning procedures to extract all of your lost data from Windows 2003 Server hard drive. These software are very easy to use and do not demand high technical skills to achieve successful recovery.
Stellar Phoenix Windows Data Recovery is the most comprehensive and robust tool that is helpful in most of the Windows file loss situations. It supports recovery from FAT16, FAT32, VFAT, NTFS and NTFS5 file system partitions. This file recovery software is compatible with Microsoft Windows Vista, 2003, XP and 2000.
